Mild steel unequal angles have one leg longer than the other. That extra length gives a wider face to bolt to, or more stiffness in the direction that matters, without paying for a heavier equal angle. They are common on lintels, purlin cleats, tower structures and anywhere a flush fixing is needed on one side. Seen Steel supplies unequal angles from 65 x 50 up to 200 x 150, cut to length and delivered to all seven emirates.

To work out any angle yourself: kg per metre = (leg A + leg B − thickness) × thickness × 0.00785, with all dimensions in mm. The real section is slightly heavier because of the root radius, so treat the figure as an estimate and invoice against the mill certificate. The full method is in our steel weight chart.
When to use an unequal angle
- A lintel or support where the long leg carries the load and the short leg bolts to the structure
- Cleats and brackets that need a wider bolting face on one side only
- Members where stiffness is needed in one direction, for the same weight of steel
- Edge and trim details where one leg has to sit flush
Where both directions matter equally, an equal angle is usually the simpler and cheaper option.

Where unequal angle earns its place
Unequal angle is specified when the load runs mainly one way, or when one face has to be wide enough to take a bolt group that would not fit on a square leg. It is also the cheaper answer where an equal angle large enough to give the needed depth would be heavier than the job warrants. If you are choosing between the two, the deciding question is usually which face you are fixing through.

Lengths and cutting
Standard supply is 6 metre lengths. Because unequal angle is usually bought for a specific structural purpose rather than kept as general stock, most orders come as a cutting list against a drawing, and that is the way to buy it. Cutting is included rather than charged on top, so there is no reason to take full lengths and cut them yourself.

Getting the section right
Write both legs and the thickness every time. A request for "100 x 50 angle" leaves the thickness open, and the weight between a 6 mm and a 10 mm is a long way apart. Where the drawing names a standard, quote it, because the same nominal size rolled to a different standard can differ at the root radius.
