GI sheet, also called galvanized sheet or galvanised iron sheet, is steel sheet coated with zinc on both faces. It is the same material as GI coil, cut to flat sheets instead of supplied on a coil, which is what most workshops and contractors actually want unless they run a roll forming line. Thicknesses and sheet sizes
Standard stock thicknesses run from 0.3 mm up to 2.0 mm. The common sheet sizes in the UAE are 1000 x 2000 mm, 1220 x 2440 mm (the four by eight foot sheet), 1250 x 2500 mm and 1500 x 3000 mm. Other sizes are cut from coil to order.
Weight per sheet
Steel weighs 7.85 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness, so sheet weight is thickness times area times 7.85. The table gives the figures for the common sizes. Zinc coating adds roughly 1 to 3 per cent on top depending on the class.

Gauge to millimetres
GI sheet is still ordered by gauge across a lot of the trade, particularly in ducting. These are the conversions in everyday use in the UAE. They are trade conventions rather than a single international standard, so on anything where thickness is critical, state the millimetre figure as well as the gauge.

Zinc coating classes
The Z number is the total zinc mass in grams per square metre counting both faces together, to EN 10346. Z275 carries at least 275 g/m², Z120 at least 120 g/m².
- Z120: indoor and dry. Ducting inside a conditioned building, partitions, enclosures.
- Z180: general purpose, light exposure, covered external areas.
- Z275: outdoors in the UAE, roofing, cladding, and anything within reach of coastal air. The sensible default where the sheet is exposed.

Plain sheet, corrugated or profiled
Plain flat sheet is what this page covers. Corrugated and profiled roofing sheet is rolled from the same coil and is quoted by profile and cover width rather than sheet size, so send the profile name or a section drawing with that kind of enquiry.
Grades and standards
- Material: EN 10346, typically DX51D for forming grades
- Coating: EN 10346 Z120, Z180 and Z275, with other classes to order
- Surface: regular or minimised spangle, chromated and oiled as standard unless you need it dry for painting
If the sheet is going to be painted or powder coated afterwards, say so on the enquiry. Chromated and oiled sheet needs preparation first and it is easier to supply it dry from the start.

Sheet is cut from coil, so you are not limited to the standard sizes. Send the finished sizes you need and the material is cut to suit, which removes the shearing from your workshop and the offcut pile that comes with it. On a mixed list the sizes get nested across the coil width to keep waste down.

What is the weight of a 1220 x 2440 GI sheet?
At 0.5 mm it is about 11.7 kg, at 1.0 mm about 23.4 kg and at 2.0 mm about 46.7 kg, before the zinc coating is counted.
What thickness is 24 gauge GI sheet?
About 0.60 mm in the conversion used across the UAE trade. State the millimetre figure as well where the thickness is critical.
Which zinc class should I use for ducting?
Z120 is normal for ducting inside a conditioned building. External ductwork, or anything near the coast, should be Z275.
Can you cut sheets to my sizes?
Yes. Sheet is cut from coil, so send the finished sizes rather than working around a standard sheet.
