JIS wide flange shapes, usually called H beams, are the Japanese standard hot rolled sections to JIS G3192. They are common in the UAE because a large share of imported structural steel comes from Japanese, Korean and Chinese mills rolling to this standard. Seen Steel supplies JIS H sections from 100 x 100 up to 700 x 300, normally in SS400, cut to length and delivered to all seven emirates.
Wide flange series
These are the square proportioned sections used as columns. The designation is depth x width x web thickness x flange thickness.

Grades
- JIS G3101 SS400, the standard general structural grade, close to ASTM A36 and EN S235
- JIS G3106 SM490, a higher strength weldable grade, roughly in the S355 band
- Dimensions and tolerances: JIS G3192
SS400 is named after its 400 MPa minimum tensile strength, not its yield, which trips people up when comparing with S275. Our guide to steel grades explains the naming.
H beam or I beam
In UAE usage, H beam usually means a JIS wide flange section with parallel flanges, and I beam often means the older tapered flange sections or the British universal beams. If a drawing just says I beam with no size, ask which standard is intended before ordering, because the sections are not interchangeable.

Standard length is 12 m, with 6 m and cut lengths available. Deliveries go to workshops and sites across all seven emirates, including Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, Mussafah, Sajaa, Ajman Industrial and Al Hamra. Mill test certificates are supplied with the material.

Frequently asked questions
What is the weight of a 200 x 200 H beam?
The standard 200 x 200 x 8 x 12 section weighs 49.9 kg per metre, so about 599 kg for a 12 m length.
Is SS400 the same as A36?
They are close and widely accepted as equivalent for general work, but they come from different standards. On a controlled project, confirm with the engineer.
What is the difference between the wide flange and narrow flange series?
Wide flange sections are about as wide as they are deep and suit columns. Narrow flange sections are deeper than they are wide and suit beams that span.
Do you supply mill test certificates?
Yes, MTCs are issued with the material.
