JIS channels are the Japanese standard hot rolled U sections to JIS G3192, normally supplied in SS400. They turn up constantly in the UAE because so much imported structural steel is rolled to Japanese standards by mills in Japan, Korea and China. Seen Steel supplies JIS channels from 75 x 40 up to 380 x 100, cut to length and delivered to all seven emirates.
Sizes and weights
The designation is depth x width x web thickness x flange thickness. Standard length is 12 m, with 6 m and cut lengths available.

Grades
- JIS G3101 SS400, the standard general structural grade, close to ASTM A36 and EN S235
- JIS G3106 SM490 on request for higher strength work

SS400 is named after its tensile strength, not its yield. Our guide to steel grades explains how it lines up against S275 and A36.
Channels are drawn in three systems in the UAE. For the European tapered flange profile see UPN channels, and for the British parallel flange profile see PFC channels. They are not interchangeable: the flange shape and the section properties differ.

Cutting and delivery
We supply 12 m or 6 m lengths, or cut to your list. Deliveries go to workshops and sites across all seven emirates, including Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, Mussafah, Sajaa, Ajman Industrial and Al Hamra. Mill test certificates are supplied with the material.

Frequently asked questions
What is the weight of a 100 x 50 JIS channel?
The 100 x 50 x 5 x 7.5 section weighs 9.36 kg per metre, so about 112 kg for a 12 m length.
Are JIS channels the same as UPN?
No. The depths look similar in places but the widths, thicknesses and flange shapes differ, so they are not direct substitutes.
Is SS400 acceptable where A36 is specified?
Usually for general fabrication, but on a controlled project get the substitution approved in writing.
Do you supply mill test certificates?
Yes, MTCs are issued with the material.
