Hot rolled coil, known in the trade as HR coil or HRC, is flat steel rolled at high temperature and wound into coils. It is the starting material for most of the flat steel used in the UAE: slit into strip for tube mills and roll formers, cut to length into sheet and plate, or processed straight into pressings, tanks, purlins and fabricated parts. Seen Steel supplies hot rolled coil in widths from 1219 mm to 2500 mm and thicknesses from about 1.5 mm to 20 mm, as full coils, slit coils or cut to length, delivered to all seven emirates.

Thickness and weight

Steel weighs 7.85 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness. The table gives the weight per square metre, which is the easiest way to estimate a coil or a cut sheet.

Thickness (mm) Approx. kg per m²
1.5 11.77
2 15.70
2.5 19.62
3 23.55
4 31.40
5 39.25
6 47.10
8 62.80
10 78.50
12 94.20
16 125.60
20 157.00

A useful rule for coil: metres per tonne = 1000 ÷ (7.85 × thickness × width in metres). A 3 mm coil 1250 mm wide gives about 34 metres of strip per tonne. For other products, see the steel weight chart.

Widths and coil sizes

  • Standard widths: 1219 mm (4 ft), 1250 mm, 1500 mm, 2000 mm and 2500 mm
  • Coil weights typically 5 to 25 tonnes depending on width and mill
  • Slit coil to your strip width for tube, profile and purlin lines
  • Cut to length sheet and plate from coil, to your size

Grades and standards

Hot rolled coil is sold either as commercial quality, for forming and general fabrication, or as structural quality with guaranteed strength.

  • Commercial and drawing quality: JIS G3131 SPHC, SAE 1006 and 1008, ASTM A1011 CS and DS. Soft and easy to bend, press and roll form.
  • Structural quality: ASTM A36, JIS G3101 SS400, EN 10025 S235JR, S275JR and S355JR, ASTM A1011 SS grades.
  • Pickled and oiled (HRPO): coil with the mill scale removed by acid pickling and protected with oil. Better for painting, powder coating and welding without grinding.

Our guide to steel grades explains how A36, SS400, S275 and S355 compare.

Hot rolled, pickled, cold rolled or galvanized

Hot rolled coil carries a grey-blue mill scale and has wider thickness tolerances. That is fine for structural parts, tanks, brackets and anything that will be blasted and painted. If you need a clean surface for painting or powder coating, ask for pickled and oiled. For thin gauges under about 1.5 mm and tight tolerances, cold rolled coil is the usual choice. For roofing, ducting and anything exposed to weather without paint, use GI coil.

Common applications

  • Slitting for ERW tube and pipe mills
  • Roll formed purlins, C and Z sections and deck profiles
  • Tanks, silos, hoppers and chutes
  • Truck and trailer bodies, chassis parts
  • Pressed and laser cut parts, brackets and base plates
  • Cut to length hot rolled sheets and hot rolled plates

Cutting and delivery

We supply full mill coils, slit coils and cut to length sheet. Tell us your coil ID and maximum coil weight so the load suits your decoiler and crane. Deliveries go to workshops and sites across all seven emirates, including Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, Mussafah, Sajaa, Ajman Industrial and Al Hamra. Mill test certificates are supplied with the material.

Frequently asked questions

What is HR coil?
HR coil is hot rolled steel coil: flat steel rolled above its recrystallisation temperature and wound into a coil. It is the base material for most sheet, plate, strip and tube.

What is the difference between HR coil and CR coil?
Cold rolled (CR) coil is hot rolled coil that has been pickled and rolled again at room temperature. It is thinner, smoother and more accurate in thickness, but costs more. HR coil is the economical choice from about 1.5 mm upwards.

What is the weight of a 3 mm steel sheet per square metre?
About 23.55 kg per square metre.

Can you slit coil to my width?
Yes. Send the strip width, the number of strips and your maximum coil weight.

Do you supply mill test certificates?
Yes, MTCs are issued with the material.
